Overcoming common roadblocks to attracting top talent

This month, I asked my LinkedIn connections: What’s your biggest challenge in attracting the best talent to your firm? Here are the results, plus some of my own thoughts on this question.

What’s the biggest roadblock to attracting the best people?

  • Finding qualified candidates (56%)

  • Competition from other firms (0%)

  • Compensation and benefits (33%)

  • Other (11%)

My take: Top talent isn’t knocking on your door

These results are insightful, but I can’t say they surprised me. Many firms are competitive as employers. They can offer great compensation packages. Their biggest problem is simply reaching the right people.

The best candidates often aren’t actively looking for new opportunities. They’re comfortable where they are; they’re performing well, not browsing job boards.

You need a recruitment strategy that goes beyond posting and waiting.

However, as one respondent elaborated: “It’s rarely just one challenge that makes talent acquisition difficult—it's a layered equation.”

My experience as an executive recruiter has proven this commenter 100% correct. Finding qualified candidates can be a tough challenge, but it’s not the only one. What makes executive-level recruiting so challenging is finding great candidates PLUS staying competitive PLUS moving quickly enough to close before another firm does.

Even when you find the perfect candidate, you might be competing against their current employer’s counter offer, another firm’s timeline, or their own personal hesitations.

It’s a lot to juggle. That’s exactly why firms partner with specialized recruiters. We know where the talent is, how to reach them, and what it takes to bring them to the table.

My team and I can help you navigate every layer of this equation. Let’s chat about what a partnership could look like.

Real or AI? Which resume bullet was generated with ChatGPT?

A: "Managed $47M in assets across 23 client portfolios, achieving 12.3% average annual returns"

B: "Orchestrated comprehensive wealth optimization strategies while spearheading innovative client engagement paradigms to maximize holistic financial outcomes"

Our answer ➡️ B screams AI. Real people just say what they did. Generative AI can be a great tool to organize your thoughts and streamline your resume content - but in the end, make sure your resume is written for human consumption.

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

“I have to pick Lord Byron. This guy had a BEAR for a pet that he walked around with at his university.  He was so memorable that after a five month affair, the woman he was involved with became famous for writing a book about him - four years later.

Lord Byron is considered one of the United Kingdom's greatest poets and people still read and study his work. Despite this, his reputation remains so awful in his own country that his poetry was banned by a Church of England court in 2020.

A guy like that HAS to be worth picking up the tab for.”
